Sleater-Kinney: One More Hour

Sleater-Kinney — ʻʻOne More Hourʼʼ

Tucker, Brownstein and Janet Weiss

Sleater-Kinney is an American rock band that formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1994 by Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar) and Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals). One of the band’s early practice spaces was near Sleater Kinney Road, in Lacey, Washington; so the group’s name is derived from this place.

Tucker was formerly in the influential riot grrrl band Heavens to Betsy, while Brownstein was formerly in the band Excuse 17. They often played at gigs together and formed Sleater-Kinney as a side-project from their respective bands. When Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 disbanded, Sleater-Kinney became their primary focus.

Upon Tucker‘s graduation from The Evergreen State College, where Brownstein remained a student for three more years, she and then-girlfriend Brownstein took a trip to Australia in early 1994.

Produced by John Goodmanson and recorded from December 1996 to January 1997 at John and Stu’s Place in Seattle, the record of their third album Dig Me Out was influenced by both classic rock ‘n’ roll and the band’s usual punk predecessors. ʻʻOne More Hourʼʼ was one of two singles released in support of the album.

The lyrical themes on Dig Me Out deal with issues of heartbreak of Tucker and Brownstein’s romantic relationship and survival. ʻʻOne More Hourʼʼ is pretty interesting as a breakup song that features both people in the relationship. The lyrics, written by the band’s frontwoman Corin Tucker, details her relationship with Brownstein. During the recording of Dig Me Out, Tucker and Brownstein were broken up and Tucker had begun dating filmmaker Lance Bangs, who she would later marry. Brownstein later also stated that almost all the songs on Dig Me Out are about either her or Tucker’s future husband, Lance Bangs.

The song features a lot of vocal interplay by Tucker and Brownstein. Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein came up with the guitar riff on “One More Hour” after listening to Gang of Four’s 1979 album Entertainment on repeat.

When Dig Me Out was released, the band went on a tour to promote the album with he band’s drummer Janet Weiss of Quasi and she became longest lasting and current drummer, though Sleater-Kinney has had other drummers, including Lora Macfarlane, Misty Farrell, and Toni Gogin. Later they went on hiatus in 2006 and devoted themselves to solo projects, until reunion in 2014.

One More Hour Lyrics

[Verse 1]
In one more hour
I will be gone
In one more hour
I’ll leave this room
The dress you wore
The pretty shoes
Are things I left
Behind for you

[Bridge 1]
Oh, you’ve got the darkest eyes
Oh, you’ve got the darkest eyes

[Chorus 1]
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(It’s so hard for you to let it go)
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(You never wanted to let it let it go)

[Verse 2]
If you could talk
What would you say?
‘Fore you things were
Just night and day
Take off the dress
Take off the face
I’ll hold you close
Before I leave

[Bridge 1]
Oh, you’ve got the darkest eyes
Oh, you’ve got the darkest eyes

[Chorus 2]
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(It’s so hard for you to let it go)
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(It’s so hard for you to let it go)
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
I needed it
(It’s so hard for you to say goodbye)
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
I needed it
(You need a little bit, just a little more time)

[Bridge 2]
Don’t say another word
About the other girl
Don’t say another word
About the other girl

[Outro]
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(It’s so hard for you to let it go)
I needed it
(I know I know I know)
Oh I needed it
(Never wanted ? to let it go)
