Team Dresch is an American punk rock and queercore band from Portland, Oregon, originally formed in Olympia, Washington, which was initially active from 1993 until 1998 as band that established itself on a platform of demolishing the patriarchy, opposing the Christian right and standing up for the LGBTQ community and self-defense issues.

Donna Dresch, founder of the band, had been involved in the queercore scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s as creator of her own fanzine Chainsaw and, in addition to contributing to other zines such as Outpunk and J.D.s, she contributed to and was featured on the cover of issue five of Homocore and appeared in the girl-gang film The Yo-Yo Gang by G.B. Jones.

All original band members: Donna Dresch on guitar/bass, Jody Elizabeth Bleyle aka Jody Coyote on guitar/bass/vocals, Kaia Wilson aka Kaia Kangaroo on guitar/vocals and Marcéo Marci Martinez on drums/vocals, were open lesbians.

Past members: Amanda Kelly on guitar on The New Team Dresch v. 6.0 Beta 7″, Melissa Jane York on drums on Captain, My Captain LP, Scott Plouf on drums on Hand Grenade 7″ and Tamala Poljak on bass& vocals on It’s A Conversation & Temporary Insurance / Audrey

The debut album Personal Best appeared in January 1995 as a co-release on the independent labels Chainsaw Records, run by Dresch and Candy Ass Records, run by Bleyle. The album’s title and cover are a reference to the 1982 lesbian-themed film of the same name. The members were committed to a DIY ethic, running their own record labels and booking their own tours.

Their second recording, LP Captain My Captain, released in 1996, also featured a guest appearance by singer-songwriter Phranc, well known lesbian musician. After Captain My Captain, Kaia Wilson and Melissa York left the band to form The Butchies, while Dresch and Bleyle continued recording with the addition of new member Amanda Kelley and with Marcéo Martinez once again on drums.

The band stopped playing in 1998, with Dresch increasingly involved in running her record label which was releasing many recordings by newer queercore bands, including Sleater-Kinney.

In the summer of 2004, Jody, Donna, Kaia, Marcéo and Melissa came together to headline the queercore festival Homo-a-Go-Go in Olympia, Washington. Since then, the band has played sporadically.

Video info: The sincerity and solemnity of the riff that opens “She’s Amazing” bloom into a punk ballad that resonates with best experiences of friendship. Wilson and Bleyle alternate and harmonize in tribute to female wisdom and strength. Even as the vocalists acknowledge their deep self-doubt and insecurity, the decisive instrumentals bolster them up.

“She’s Amazing” Lyrics

It’s where the obvious turns dumb and clarity turns off
I’m standing somewhere near the back of the room
I’m on her left I’m in betwen her

She’s amazing, her words save me
She holds her head as if it’s true

Where the last one passed me by

Read about her in the papers and on TV
\They say she’s outspoken
Many people will try to destroy her
But if she were to stop, I stop, we all stop

She’s amazing, her words save me
She holds her head as if it’s truth

I’m sorry, my mistake, do I sound strange?
I always wanted to make sense, I fell flat
I cave in I gave in you cannot trust all lies
I always wanted to make sense do I lose…

She’s amazing, her words save me
She holds her head and it’s truth
