Tegan and Sara — ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ [Official Music Video]

Video info: ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ is a song written and recorded by Canadian musical duo, composed of identical twin sisters Tegan /ˈtiːɡən/ Rain Quin and Sara /ˈsɛərə/ Keirsten Quin, for their eighth studio album, Love You to Death (2016). Both musicians are songwriters and multi-instrumentalists and they are openly lesbians. Upon its release, ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ was met with generally positive reviews and moderate commercial reception.

ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ was selected as the album’s lead single and the duo released a teaser video to YouTube. Blaring synths accompany a thundering percussion beat, while the song also makes use of hand claps.

Lyrically, the song tackles the subject of defining a relationship, with the chorus listing contradictory behaviour that makes the narrator feel sometimes like a lover and other times like a friend. Inspired by a love triangle from Sara Quin’s past in which she was dating a bisexual woman who had never dated another woman and was still also dating a man, ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ also touches on LGBT themes including societal heteronormativity. On the relatability of the song, Sara Quin explained: ʻʻObviously, being gay, there’s sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song… that sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody[…]. But… we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is aboutʼʼ.

In the official music video for ʻʻBoyfriendʼʼ, the twins take part in a fashion photo shoot organized by a fictionalized Rachel Antonoff which involved dogs, confetti, and a fan. Parenthood actresses Mae Whitman and Sarah Ramos also make cameo appearances.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Tell you that I love you, that I can’t hold back
The feeling that you give me, wanna give it right back
I know you always win at this particular game
I need to know the rules if you want me to play

[Chorus]
You treat me like your boyfriend
And trust me like a… like a very best friend
You kiss me like your boyfriend
You call me up like you want your best friend
You turn me on like you want your boyfriend
But I don’t want to be your secret anymore

[Verse 2]
I’m trying to be honest cause I can’t relax
Oh, when I get around you I can’t hide the facts
\I let you take advantage cause it felt so good
I blame myself for thinking we both understood

[Chorus]
You treat me like your boyfriend
And trust me like a… like a very best friend
You kiss me like your boyfriend
You call me up like you want your best friend
You turn me on like you want your boyfriend
But I don’t want to be your secret anymore

[Bridge]
Don’t wanna, don’t wanna play the crying game
Do you feel the same? You feel the same
Don’t wanna, don’t wanna spin the bottle again
Do you feel the same? You feel the same

[Chorus]
You treat me like your boyfriend
And trust me like a… like a very best friend
You kiss me like your boyfriend
You call me up like you want your best friend
You turn me on like you want your boyfriend
But I don’t want to be your secret anymore

You treat me like your boyfriend
And trust me like a… like a very best friend
You kiss me like your boyfriend
You call me up like you want your best friend
You turn me on like you want your boyfriend
But I don’t want to be your secret anymore
