Emporia State University LogoEmporia State University, often referred to as Emporia State or ESU, is a public university in Emporia, Kansas, United States, ea the third oldest public university in the state of Kansas. Emporia State is one of six public universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. Since 1863, Emporia State University has prepared teachers in nationally acclaimed teacher education programs. Located in a vibrant and welcoming community, Emporia State and the city of Emporia are committed to help you reach your educational goals.

Emporia State University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. For the last 40 years, outstanding and highly accredited programs in Library and Information Management have prepared students to take their place in a competitive and increasingly global society. Emporia State has a satellite campus in Kansas City, which is mostly online classes, but some classes are held in the building.

The university offers PhD degree at School of Library and Information Management. SLIM (School of Library and Information Management) offers a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science with classes taught on the Emporia campus and attended either face-to-face or through distance technology. Doctoral courses are designed to meet the needs of traditional and non-traditional students with only two weekend-intensive weekends per course, supplemented by online Blackboard instruction. The doctoral curriculum is a five-tier process that introduces students to library and information science research through course work and prepares them for writing a dissertation. Students plan a concentration to reflect their interest in specific fields of study. Up to 15 doctoral students are admitted to the program every other year. Admissions are competitive and require a Masters degree, grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, GRE scores, official transcripts, a statement of career goals and interests, and a sample of written work.

The SLIM doctoral program is based on a core curriculum of four foundational courses, four research courses, and four advanced courses in a concentration. In addition, students take a course in teaching and learning in organizations before beginning the guided readings that prepare them for the qualifying exam and subsequent dissertation research. The Doctoral Program Handbook (2014) provides detailed information about program requirements and applying to the ESU Office of Graduate Studies and Research and the School of Library and Information Management. The program accepts new students every even-numbered year with the next cohort beginning in the fall of 2016. Applications will begin June 1, 2015. Applicants are accepted based on their educational achievement, experience, and interests. The program requires a minimum of 56 credit hours for the doctoral degree. Applicants must have already completed a master’s degree (in any related discipline) of at least 34 credit hours to meet ESU’s requirement of 90 graduate credits for the degree.
